Really fascinating, genuine & heartfelt review. Am currently reading Steinbergs book ‘Winnie & Nelson’ & as a long time critical supporter but critic of the ANC, as I read the book from which am learning lots about the lives of many key ANC activists, I too am torn about just how critical we should be of that generation. And then, a message from a dear comrade age 60 from Umlazi arrives. I asked him how life was there (he and his wife have not worked for over 5 years) he says “… I asked Mandla how life was in Umlazi he and his wife have not worked for over 5 years) he says “…You won't believe

Ieve what's happening here. And it would seem as though the Township people walk around like ghosts of survival. Everything is about surviving for the next meal. Poeple are so overcome and hit by poverty and idling around that they are completely unsocial - meaning nothing else matters; no social activities, no sporting activities, political activities , meetings , no organizations, even stokvels. Crime has become a daylight normality. Small business spaza shops are being robbed by extortionist syndicates, who come everymonth to collect a fee called " security fee", as a result many small businesses are dying. Lots of youth walking aimlessly in the streets, schools knock off early most days especially on teacher pay day. Apparently it started during Covid- 19 and went on after Covid and then became a norm. Add to that is water shortage in schools and loadshedding. Its a mess. Its a reign of disorder, no more interschool sports as a general normality only few patches of such activities. Its a lifeless experience. And it's a lonely place because most of the people I knew either died of AIDS or other ailments and a few migrated to other places or work elsewhere etc”
